S&S Ag Mechanics wins $12,000 Scholarship

S&S FFA recently participated in the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo Ag Mechanics Project Show. There were 636 projects from 315 schools statewide entered and all schools compete together regardless of size.

The show looks like a high end Ag equipment dealership. Many projects combined complicated mechanics, electrical wiring and hydraulics held together by strong welds and paint jobs that look like they belong on a sports car.

The show, supervised by the agricultural mechanics department of Texas State University University, helps to promote the development of skills in agricultural mechanics through competition.

Divisions for contest entries are agricultural machinery and equipment, electrical equipment, livestock equipment, and trailers. Each project is judged on a 100 point system, including workmanship 30 points, design and material used 20 points, practicality 20 points, degree of difficulty 10 points, quality 10 points, and student knowledge and presentation 10 points.

The projects are judged and awarded a blue ribbon for 90-100, red ribbon for 80-90, or a white ribbon for 70-80 and then the blue ribbon projects are placed. After the placing the projects that go above and beyond the expectations of a blue ribbon are also awarded a purple ribbon. S & S students took were awarded a blue and purple ribbon for their project, and went on to place second in the Gooseneck Float Trailer Class.

Levi McDowell  and Cameron Fisher received a blue ribbon and were 1st place Multi bale trailer with their self loading 6 bale trailer in a class of over 20 projects. Wyatt Maher had a blue ribbon Hydraulic Bale Spike which in the Hay Equipment Division.

Cameron and Levi went on to be Reserve Champion Trailer out of over 100 trailers and each of the two were awarded a $6,000.00 scholarship as well as all kinds of tools and equipment.

Ag Mechanics instructor Warren Maher said, “These students have worked very hard and spent countless hours after school and on weekends to build these projects and their hard work and excellent skills paid off with the thousands of dollars worth of prizes they brought home.”

Members of the show’s agricultural mechanics contest committee solicit additional prizes from the community for the contest. These are in addition to the plaques and ribbons awarded to the most outstanding projects. The interest and generous donations from these community sponsors have made it possible for this project show to grow in both numbers and quality. This year’s prizes were worth an estimated $250,000.

Capitalizing on skills, knowledge and talent is emphasized in the S&S agricultural programs, and the S&S FFA program always features remarkable exhibits, backed by students as equally outstanding.
